Minangkabau or commonly abbreviated as Minang is a native ethnic group of the archipelago whose cultural distribution area includes areas that are now included in the province of West Sumatra (except the Mentawai Islands), half of mainland Riau, northern Bengkulu, western part of Jambi, west coast of North Sumatra, southwest of Aceh , and Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia.

In lay conversation, the Minang people are often equated with Padang people, referring to the name of the capital city of West Sumatra province, Padang. However, this community usually refers to their group as urang crew, which means the same as the Minang people themselves.

The Minangkabau people are very prominent in the field of commerce, as professionals and intellectuals. They are honorable heirs from the old tradition of the Malay and Sriwijaya Kingdoms who love to trade and are dynamic. Thomas Stamford Raffles, after conducting an expedition to the center of the Pagaruyung Kingdom in the interior of Minangkabau, noted that Minangkabau was a source of strength and origin for the Malay people, whose population was then spread widely in the Eastern Islands.

Nearly half of the total number of members of this community are overseas and generally they live in big cities, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Pekanbaru, Medan, Batam, Palembang and Surabaya. Outside the territory of Indonesia, there are many ethnic Minang in Kuala Lumpur, Seremban, Singapore, Jeddah, Sydney and Melbourne.

Minang writers have greatly influenced the development of Indonesian language and literature. They develop language through various kinds of writing and expertise.
