I couldn't think of a better recording to start with than the initial release from Command Records, Persuasive Percussion by Terry Snyder And The All Stars. This record came out in 1959, and set the audio world on fire with its dazzling stereo sound, fascinating arrangements and top notch performances. Essentially a demo disc and audiophile favorite since its release, the record is a true high fidelity stereo masterpiece. I wondered how the 4 Track 7.5 IPS tape edition would stack up against my best pressings. This reel to reel tape was played back on a restored Studer Revox A77 4 Track Reel To Reel Deck and compared to the early gray label vinyl pressing mastered by George Piros. The record was played back on the VPI Scout with Classic Platter, JMW Memorial Tonearm with a Hana ML Moving Coil Cartridge. Please see below for the rest of the system.
The results were eye opening and brought up more questions to ponder.
