Alarippu is one of the invocatory pieces in a Bharathanatyam Margam. The word ‘Alarippu’ is derived from the root word ‘Alaru’ meaning a flowering bud. Thus, it is the opening of the body and the limbs and is considered as a warmup piece for dancers to get prepared to execute the complex items to be taken up subsequently in a typical Margam. In an Alarippu, the dancers pay obeisance to the god, the Guru, and the audience through the body movements. The Alarippu movements are executed in three different tempos that begin with the eyes, joined by the neck and shoulder then move onto Mandi Adavu in the second half and later culminates with vibrant footwork and Teermana Adavu.
