It was one of the most dangerous bombing missions of World War II. The target was the nowfamous Schweinfurt Keigelfischer ball bearing works on April 13, 1944. Approximately twenty minutes from the target, swarms of German ME109s and FW190s attacked the B17 bombers in headon attacks. The Eighth Air Force lost 38 bombers on that day.
