Add a bonus 10" onto your skirt with this fun hack that allows you to historybound AND be historically "accurate" (adequate) in the very same garment! Today’s project is to make a fully and easily removable bottom extension to my skirt that will bring the hem much closer to floor length, and bring the skirt much closer to been historically adequate.

This goofy little experiment solves that perpetual problem of historical padding and hem length. If you want to historybound and wear your skirt a bit more incognito, and without all that historical padding, then you need a hem that will be level in your everyday undergarments. But then if you want to have it be properly historical, and you put on all the undergarments, well now your hem's going to be higher in the back than in the front. So this way, I feel like you really can have it all. You can have the shorter everyday length AND a longer historical length, and both with level hems, it's amazing!

Of note here: I did not wear any historical undergarments to film the final reveal because I realized I didn't have all the elements (I filmed this while travelling), and you can see that the hem isn't quite level; back of the skirt is definitely a bit longer... but that's exactly the point! It would be level if worn with my corset and bum pad, as I had intended. And of course you can exaggerate or deemphasize this effect as you wish make the extension 4" longer in the back than the front, or just make it an even length for the whole thing. You do you, take this concept and run with it. The idea was to have a fun sewing project and in the end, a flexible skirt!
