The modified Rankine cycle is represented by 12'3'341 cycle on pv and Ts diagram in Fig. 35.1. In this cycle the expansion is stopped at a pressure called release pressure which is above the condenser (back) pressure and then it falls to the condenser (back) pressure at constant volume.

Why is modified Rankine cycle used?
Modification of the Rankine cycle involves increasing the final feedwater temperature through use of a Reboiler and an Exergetic Heater. It eliminates cycle efficiency from dependency on turbine steam path pressure.

Where is modified Rankine cycle used?
In steam engine plants the steam is not expanded down to condenser pressure. It is released at a higher pressure and then there is a pressure drop at constant volume down to condenser pressure.

What is a reheat modified Rankine cycle?
Reheating is a method of improving Rankine cycle efficiency which consists of interstage heating of the expanding steam. After the first stage of expansion which typically reduces initial steam pressure by onefourth, the steam is heated up (or close) to the maximum heat source temperature.

Modified Rankine Cycle: We have seen in the Rankine cycle, that the steam is expanded to the extreme toe of the pv diagram ( at point 3) as shown in the figure. But in actual reciprocating steam engines, it is found to be too uneconomical (due to large size of the cylinder) to expand steam to the full limit (i.e. up to the point 3)

What are the reasons for modification of Rankine cycle?
Use of Modified Rankine cycle causes the
Reduction of the bore of cylinder.
Reduction of the stroke of cylinder.
Increase the work output of an engine.
Increase the efficiency of an engine.
