The city of Dubai could be considered as a mirage, an unreal place designed as a Westernstyle theme park, so that visitors can tour a city that shouldn’t exist, created from scratch, and in which the visit itself is something like a mirage in which there’s nothing else to see except the things so great that humanity can build to be visited. Skyscrapers, immense avenues, luxury shopping centers and developments of dubious usefulness and high standing that are half inhabited where no one stays.
The speed at which this infrastructure has been built, with super hotels or emblematic buildings such as the Burj Khalifa, which basically sought to create a model of economy and society outside the petrodollar, has been a challenge of impressive infrastructures, but as a good public setting, the part of the back room and its digestion are the real problems of an unreal place, which exists based on a lot of effort and that perhaps time will end up deconstructing it just as it was built.
This fable of the papiermâché fortress can also be transferred not only to the land of absurd infrastructures, of which we in Spain know for a while, but also to the impossibility of being able to build a future with money alone.
