Monster Arctic Char / Fishing In The Canadian Arctic / Tree River

Follow
FishN The Arctic with Ryan Gregory

During the Pandemic in 2020, a good friend and I had the once in a life time opportunity to experience Fishing for Arctic Char, on the Worldfamous Tree River in Nunavut, during a Special Northwest Territories & Nunavut Residents only Staycation Flyin Special, for a select few that managed to get a ticket. I was so excited to finally break out my Float rod and Centre Pin Reel, that had been out of the action, since moving to the Arctic, from Ontario.

Growing up in Southern Ontario, I learned how to fish, while chasing migratory Trout and Salmon, along the tributaries of Lake Ontario and Lake Huron. Arctic Char, are the most prestigious fish of all the migratory fish species and have been high on my bucket list for a long time. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would have the chance to fish this world famous location, but here I was, it was late August and the water levels were at an all time high across the Arctic. The biggest challenge would be having clear weather to make the flight in and carrying a 70lb back pack on a lastminute overnight flyin, SelfGuided back pack fishing adventure, after being stuck at home for the last 5 months! It was a long hike in as we wanted to make it to the 3rd set of Falls, in search of the holy grail of Char from the Tree River in full spawning colours, while surviving a night on the Barren Lands of the Canadian Arctic, with the Grizzly Bears!
