The struggle against Germany in WWII was the bloodiest in Soviet Union history. An estimated 15 million civilians died, 11 million soldiers, and a 3year blockade of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) starved a million people. The Soviet Union bore the brunt of German aggression. Russian soldiers held on and Moscow and St. Petersburg never fell. Sixty percent of households lost someone in the war. Even 80 years later the struggle is remembered solemnly as the great patriotic war for survival.
The Germans suffered threequarters of their wartime losses fighting the Red Army.
The Victory Museum in Moscow is the largest museum of military history in the Russian Federation. The museum hosts the largest collection of World War II military equipment in Europe.
