The Moynet Jupiter is a quaint design from France, sharing the similar pushpull configuration (or blowsuck, if you prefer) as the Cessna Skymaster. Designed by WWII fighter pilot André Moynet, the Jupiter started off as a single engine but evolved into the twin configuration. ⁣

Whereas the Skymaster somehow managed to look cool, the Jupiter is a real oddball. The first portion of the fuselage is reminiscent of a Piper Saratoga, and as you go further back the fuselage gets wider and wider (the fuselage does not taper). The rear Lycoming engine appears sort of grafted on, as if intended for easy removal (or inflight jettisoning?). A very wide horizontal stabilizer/wing is flanked by huge twin rudders. It was built in 2 variants: 4seater powered by Lycoming 360s and a 6seater with 540s. A growth model seating up to 10, and powered by 400HP Lycomings, was also in the works. ⁣

The Jupiter was to be manufactured by Sud Aviation (imagine this sharing production line space with the Concorde!) but orders never materialized and production didn’t take place. The 6seater model was restored after a lengthy rebuild and is the only airworthy Jupiter flying. While not exactly eyepleasing (to me at least, it’s great to know this rare piece of history is in good hands. ⁣ Très bien!

To my french friends friends, anyone have any updates on this rare bird? Is it still active? I’d love to see it in person one day.
