Footage of 2021 New Flyer "Xcelsior" XDE40s operating along the M72 bus route in Manhattan. This route operate from East 72nd Street & York Avenue on the Upper East Side, to West 66th Street & Freedom Place on the Upper West Side. Buses operate mainly along 72nd Street, although they use the 65th Street Transverse through Central Park. While XDE40s appeared on the M72 sporadically since their arrival at Quill Depot in September 2021, they were not used on a frequent basis until February 2022. Nowadays, it is a lot more common to find an XDE40 bus on the M72.

Quill Depot is receiving XDE40 hybrid buses to replace their older Orion VII NG hybrids (all the OG Hybrids are now retired). The 2021 XDE40s (95909619) have all been delivered, while the 2022 XDE40 order is underway. The 2021 New Flyer Xcelsiors have doors which slide outward, which is different from those on older models. Buses also have a camera and small TV near the operator's area which activates when the bus is at a bus stop and picks up & drops off riders. Future Xcelsior orders will also have these features

This is not the first time though, that the XDE40s have operated on Quill routes. This happened for a brief moment in early 2019, when two 2018 XDE40s from the 95019509 batch at Grand Avenue, were transferred first to Quill Depot.
