My recommend shoe, if you are not interested in MTB specific shoes right away are skateboard shoes like Vans Old School Pro. or Sk8 hi.

MTB specific shoes can be pricey but Giro makes some budget friendly options and five 10 is a standard shoe brand on the trail.

If anyone has a more scientific way of explaining this or other arguments/opinions please comment and let me know.

So to wrap this up, lets talk again about why placing the center of your foot in the middle of the pedal is bad.

Creates a harder balance due more body weight on the pedals
Doesn’t allow for smooth rotations in pedaling
More likely to crash from foot slips
IMO it looks bad….. I can usually spot a person who rides flat footed or used to riding clips

And why is toe placement is better?

Better bike control and balance
agility and speed
more opportunity for tricks
less injuries
