Take a journey on what is arguably one of San Francisco's most interesting bus lines. The 33 Ashbury/18th (formerly and affectionately known as the 33 Stanyan), while far from being one of the most popular lines in MUNI's vast bus network, has been on the itinerary to film for a long time.

The line is known for the sharpest turn a bus has to make in San Francisco. The hairpin is located at the intersection of Market and Clayton Streets and, in addition to being fun to experience on a bus, the turn affords fantastic views of the city anywhere you look.

The 33 ceased to exist for 10 months during the COVID19 pandemic, when MUNI made drastic service cuts to forestall a budget shortfall amid abysmal ridership. Service was restored, however, in January 2021, providing me with an opportunity to fulfill a longtime wish to film the hairpin turn the line is famous for.

This journey films a lot more than just the turn; in fact, the majority of the line is filmed. Starting from the bustling Mission District at 16th Street BART, we travel west, and then north, to the terminus of the 33 at California and Cherry Streets in the Inner Richmond.

Along the way, we see the sights of Sutro Tower, Downtown, and Golden Gate Park. The ride is quite a scenic one, and one that I would recommend to anyone looking for an interesting journey through many distinct parts of San Francisco.
