MUSCLES OF MASTICATION
#MindfulMonday

If you have the ability to open & close your mouth, chew, swallow & speak take a second to pause & appreciate these beautiful muscles for granting us the ability to perform these vital functions on the daily

The muscles of mastication are a group of muscles responsible for the chewing movement of the mandible at the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint which works as a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. They enhance the process of eating, they assist in grinding food, & also function to approximate the teeth.

This beautiful image via @anatomystandard includes two of the four primary muscles of mastication:
Temporalis
Masseter
Medial & Lateral Pterygoids (Not pictured because they are located behind the masseter)

Image also includes a few of the secondary/ accessory muscles:
Suprahyoid muscles (digastric muscle, mylohyoid muscle)
Buccinator (not pictured)
Infrahyoid muscles (not pictured sternohyoid, sternothyroid, thyrohyoid, and omohyoid muscle)

Wishing each of you an excellent start to your week! Subscribe to our YT channel here for more!
