Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Nalanda, a name synonymous with ancient learning, and boasts a rich history spanning centuries. Established in the 5th century CE by the Gupta emperors, Nalanda flourished as a renowned Buddhist mahavihara (monasteryuniversity).
This intellectual hub attracted scholars from across Asia, seeking knowledge in philosophy, logic, medicine, and other disciplines. Nalanda's vast library housed countless texts, making it a treasure trove of wisdom.
Under the patronage of the Pala Empire (8th12th centuries), Nalanda reached its zenith. However, with the decline of the Pala Empire and subsequent invasions, Nalanda gradually lost its prominence by the 13th century.
Today, the ruins of Nalanda stand as a testament to its glorious past, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A recently established Nalanda University carries the torch of learning forward, aiming to recreate the spirit of this ancient center of knowledge.
