DCSO in partnership with the Durham County Department of Public Health is pleased to offer NARCAN to the public through a vending machine in the lobby of the detention facility. Accessible 24 hours a day the machine offers Naloxone, also known by the name brand “Narcan”. Narcan is a lifesaving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids—including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications—when given in time. Naloxone is easy to use and small to carry. People at risk for opioid overdose including those struggling with opioid use disorder (OUD) take high doses of opioid medications, or those who use or know someone who uses illicit opioids like heroin are recommended to carry naloxone.
