NASA held a critical virtual meeting on July 10th to deliberate on the future of the Starliner spacecraft, and that was just two days ago. Following a string of setbacks and technical difficulties that have beset the program—including a helium leak and thruster malfunction in June—this meeting was called. As the space agency chooses the best course of action to guarantee the safe return of their astronauts, the stakes are enormous.
There is a lot of curiosity about NASA's recent decision. The space agency has stated that, in the event of a crisis, the Starliner spacecraft will have a fallback plan that involves SpaceX's Dragon capsule. This statement emphasizes how important SpaceX is to NASA's commercial crew program even now.
Despite the difficulties, NASA remains optimistic about the Starliner's potential. Engineers are working around the clock to address over thirty issues with the spacecraft's propulsion system. Most of these problems have been fixed, and the rest ought to be completed soon.
