However, as the ISS nears the end of its operational lifespan, the need for new outposts to carry on its legacy, particularly in establishing permanent settlements, becomes increasingly apparent. Enter the era of commercial space stations.
Today, we'll explore the top four nextgeneration space stations poised to succeed the ISS and usher in a new chapter in human space exploration.

Let's start with the space station that has me the most excited: the SpaceX Starship space station.
While many commercial space stations have ties to NASA, even participating in programs like the CLD program, the Starship space station is a project developed entirely by SpaceX. This autonomy gives SpaceX the freedom to take a more proactive approach to its vision. What's particularly intriguing about their plan is how they intend to repurpose their colossal rocket, the Starship, into a space station.

One of the key strengths of this design is its spaciousness. Each Starship will boast impressive dimensions: standing at 50 meters tall with a diameter of 9 meters. In newer versions of the Starship, these dimensions may even be larger, resulting in a habitable volume of approximately 18 meters in height. This alone would offer a habitable volume of up to 1000 cubic meters, surpassing the entire volume of the ISS, which stands at 900 cubic meters. SpaceX might even optimize this space further by removing components like fuel tanks, potentially tripling the available volume for living quarters.
