People in France have voted to elect 577 members of the country’s National Assembly.
Exit polls show that Marine Le Pen’s farright National Rally (RN) party are ahead in the first round of France’s parliamentary elections.
We now head into several days of horsetrading before next week’s runoff.
According to exit polls, the RN won around 34% of the vote, which puts the party ahead of leftist and centrist rivals, including President Emmanuel Macron’s Ensemble alliance, whose bloc won 20.5% 23%.
The New Popular Front, a hastily assembled leftwing coalition, was projected to win around 29% of the vote, the exit polls showed.
The results from the highturnout vote, which were in line with polls ahead of the election, have provided little clarity on whether the antiimmigrant, eurosceptic RN will be able to form a government alongside the proEU Macron.
