NDVI with class range in ArcGIS

Follow
GIS & RS Solution

Dear Viewers, I hope you are doing very great at your place and all is well with you and your family. In this video I have shown you how to make NDVI map with range and interpretation. Here I have used sentinel2 imagery which is 10 meter resolution. This video will be helpful for you as you are going to know NDVI process and importantly how to make classes manually.

This channel is like my family where we are about more than 8 thousand member and it is growing day by day. Thank you everyone for being with this family.

What is NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index)?

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) quantifies vegetation by measuring the difference between nearinfrared (which vegetation strongly reflects) and red light (which vegetation absorbs).

NDVI always ranges from 1 to +1.

For example, when you have negative values, it’s highly likely that it’s water. On the other hand, if you have an NDVI value close to +1, there’s a high possibility that it’s dense green leaves. But when NDVI is close to zero, there aren’t green leaves and it could even be an urbanized area.

Class NDVI Range

Water 0.28 to 0.015
Built up area 0.015 to 0.14
Barren land 0.14 to 0.18
Shrub and Grassland 0.18 to 0.27
Sparse Vegetation 0.27 to 0.36
Dense Vegetation 0.36 to 0.74

How do you calculate NDVI?

Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) uses the NIR and red channels in its formula.

NDVI = (NIR Red) / (NIR + Red)

For Sentinel2, the index will be as follows;
NDVI = (Band 8 Band 4) / (Band 8 + Band 4)
where, Band 8 is NIR and Band 4 is Red band.

NDVI for other datasets:
I have an another video on NDVI using Landsat 8, 7, 5 Imagery. If you want to know how to do NDVI using Landsat 8, 7 or 5 bands, then you can check that video (Link has given in below). Hope you will be benefitted.

Landsat 8 NDVI = (B5 B4) / (B5 + B4)
Landsat 5 and 7 NDVI = (B4 B3) / (B4 + B3)
MODIS NDVI = (B2 B1) / (B2 + B1)
ENVISAT MERIS NDVI = (B13 B07) / (B13 + B07)
