Animal tissues can broadly be categorized into four types, viz., epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue and nervous tissue.

− It coordinates and controls many body activities by stimulating muscle contraction. It creates an awareness of the environment, and plays a major role in emotions, memory, and reasoning.

Nervous tissue is the component of the  .

Nervous system is categorized mainly into two types, viz., central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Central nervous system includes the brain and the spinal chord. Peripheral nervous system connects different body parts with the central nervous system.

It communicates with other cells using nerve impulse.
It is the main functional unit of the nervous tissue.
Main parts of neuron are cell body, dendrites, axon, nerve endings.


They provide support and protection for neurons.
Glial cells include oligodendrocytes, astrocytes, ependymal cells, microglia, Schwann cells and satellite cells.
These cells have four main functions:
(1) to surround neurons and hold them in place
(2) to supply nutrients and oxygen to neurons
(3) to insulate one neuron from another
(4) to destroy pathogens and remove dead neurons.
