Much work is currently being done around managing neutropenia, a lot being aimed at Medical and Nursing staff seeing patients who present to Hospital. The NWLCN Chemotherapy Nurses Group identified a need for more patient focused education ensuring that patients would present early when they developed symptoms and that all patients would receive the same information; building on work with the alert cards already in circulation.
Becky Johl, Senior Nurse for Chemotherapy, at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, led on this project, working with patients who have first hand experience of neutropenic sepsis, and have produced a DVD utilising an educational grant from Chugai Pharmaceutical. The DVD features Medical, Nursing Staff and patients stressing the importance of seeking early advice if they have any symptoms which could indicate neutropenia.
This is a wonderful new tool and will be available for all chemotherapy suites within NWLCN Network and beyond
