After about 21 days of incubation, the hatching begins! This Scrub Jay (Aphelocoma californica) pair built their nest and laid eggs back in late March. Now with fresh chicks in the nest, these two birds have their work cut out for them.

At the beginning of the show, a crow lands in the small tree only several feet above the nest, and the birds go crazy, making lots of noise and (not visible on camera) attacking the crow until they drive it away. The tree and nest are visibly shaken during this event, but all is well in the end. The rest of the show details how the parent birds care for their tiny, delicate hatchlings, and each other.
