CINCINNATI (WKRC) There is new research that could help some people overcome a common food allergy.

A new therapy could help those who are allergic to eggs soon be able to eat them. It is called egg oral immunotherapy. It may work to especially help children overcome an egg allergy, according to a new study.

This study was presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology annual meeting. Half of the kids with an egg allergy that had this therapy treatment for four years were able to eat eggs without an allergic reaction.

Oral immunotherapy is a new type of treatment that involves consuming a small amount of egg protein daily. It is gradually increased over time until a full serving is reached. Eggs do make the list as one of the top food allergies. Kids tend to be born with this allergy and it sometimes diminishes with age but not always.

This study included children ages 5 to 11 years old. It's significant because eggs are often in many foods from baked goods to main dishes.

This could help kids continue to get good protein sources from eggs later in life.
