I recently read a new study whereby patients who had surgery had their spines compared to their MRI findings. It showed that MRIs are incorrect (versus what the surgeon's saw) over 30% of the time. Therefore, if you have surgery based solely on the MRI findings, you will have unnecessary surgery 30% of the time.
Only with a comprehensive pain workup can the correct cause of neck or back pain be determined, so that the appropriate treatment planned.
