Join us on a hike to the top of Wairere Waterfalls near Matamata and the Hobbiton Movie Set in New Zealand.

Wairere is the highest waterfall on the North Island of New Zealand and a popular hiking track in the Waikato region.

It was a beautiful sunny day, so we made sure to prepare with lots of water, light snacks, and SPF before heading out.

After a short picturesque drive from Tauranga we arrived at the foot of the hill and noticed there were quite a few people walking the trails to Wairere Falls.

There was also a sign saying that it would take us 45 minutes to the lookout point and another 45 to the top of the waterfall. So, in total, it takes about 3 hours to go up and down, without all the selfies and rest stops, of course.

Armed with enthusiasm and a love for hiking, we decided to tackle the trails right away.

Even though we haven’t done many of these long hikes in New Zealand (only eight), we could immediately tell this would be one of our favorites. All those massive boulders made the place feel surreal. Unfortunately, because it was the peak of the dry season, there was not much water, but it still looked amazing.

Plus, the trails were booming with life. Birds, insects, and small animals were literally making a symphony of sounds under the hot summer sun.

Another thing that came to mind was that Kiwis are so outdoorsy. We have visited similar places in Switzerland, which offer a good climb, but many choose a gondola or a cable car ride over a hike to the top.

Here, in New Zealand, people just love being one with nature which really resonates with us as a family. Even little children were walking the trails.

Arriving at the viewpoint, we were able to see the Wairere falls in the distance. Due to the hot season, there was not much water, but it added to the already breathtaking scenery.

We took about an hourlong break to take some super awesome pictures and get some rest. Then we were back on the trail, with another 45 minutes to go.

Soon, we found ourselves at the top of the Wairere waterfalls and the view did not disappoint! It felt like we entered another dimension; it literally looked like Jurassic Park. New Zealand is magical!

We took our time enjoying the adrenaline rush that standing on the waterfall edge was giving us and even had a small picnic. So cool right?

Once we were able to take all that beauty in, we slowly started descending. We were so happy thinking we had reached the foot of the hill and then we realized we still had another 20 minutes to go :) Tired, but happy, we were so pleased we embarked on this adventure.
