New Zealand Tightens Work Visa Rules Amid Record Migration Levels
New Zealand has tightened work visa rules in response to "unsustainable" migration levels. Lowskilled applicants will now have to fulfil Englishlanguage requirements and will be allowed to stay on for three years down from five, previously. New Zealand's immigration minister Erica Stanford stressed the importance of new immigration policies and said the changes are critical for the government's plan to rebuild the economy. A nearrecord 173,000 people migrated to New Zealand in 2023. The new work visa changes are in a bid to overhaul the existing immigration system. The influx of migrants started after the COVID19 pandemic ended.
