About my short video: My unforgettable encounter with a Kōkako
   • My unforgettable encounter with a Kōkako

Back at the beginning of 2016, I visited Masterton in the North Island of New Zealand. While driving, I noticed a large bird rescue facility that covered miles of native forest, all protected by a high, neat fence to keep predators out. This facility, Pukaha National Wildlife Centre, is known for its extensive conservation efforts and is home to the first white kiwi in captivity.

Once nursed back to health, birds from this facility are often relocated to predatorfree bird sanctuaries, such as the offshore islands around New Zealand. During my visit, I had the incredible opportunity to see a kokako for the first time. This beautiful bird has a bluishgrey color with bright blue wattles under its beak.

Spending time with the kokako was such a treat, especially since I was the only visitor at the time, allowing for an undisturbed and intimate experience. Kokakos are known for their intelligence and social nature, and it certainly enjoyed the companionship. The kokako’s unique song and friendly behavior made the encounter unforgettable.

Pukaha National Wildlife Centre:
Located near Masterton, it plays a crucial role in the conservation of New Zealand's native bird species.
The centre is involved in breeding and rehabilitation programs for endangered birds.
It’s a predatorfree environment, providing a safe haven for native wildlife.

Kokako:
The kokako is a rare and unique bird native to New Zealand, known for its striking blue wattles and melodious song.
It is a wattlebird and is related to the nowextinct huia.
Kokakos prefer dense, mature forests and are often found in North Island regions.
Conservation efforts have been critical in preventing the decline of kokako populations, which face threats from habitat destruction and predation.
