NIANDRA '94 - Eurorack LoFi Tape Style (Oxi One // Rings // Qu Bit Nautilus / DataBender // Magneto)

A M I N A L S

Finally my next patch. I had a hard time mixing it because not everything went smoothly during the recording, but I realized that too late. Nevertheless, it is now finished and I am quite pleased. I went for a more melodic patch and wanted to go in a kind of vinatage direction again. The sound of the first John Frusciante album was an inspiration. It was recorded thru a Fourtrack machine (Tascam 424)

I wanted to create a very nostalgic mood. I added hi & low cuts as well as saturation to many of the sounds to emphasize the lofi character.

The entire sequencing is done by the Oxi One, which is in song mode and plays a simple arrangement with several pattern variations. The main melody develops over time.

The main theme is played by a pitchmodulated MI Rings, which goes into a Shakmat Dual Dagger. This takes the highs and lows out of the signal and adds some resonance to the low and hi cut. The Hi Cut is modulated with a moderate sine curve from the Xaoc Devices Batumi.

From the Dual Dagger it goes into an Intellijel Quad VCA where the signal is saturated via a 6db boost. From there it goes into a buffered mult where the signal is multiplied. Here I can tap the main signal once directly with the Expert Sleepers ES9.

Another copy of the signal goes into the Qu Bit Nautilus with two delay lines and some additional distortion.

This enables me to record the main signal and the signal from the Nautilus separately. With both the Rings and the Nautilus, the left and right signals are recorded separately. So I am free in the distribution in the stereo field.

The signal from the Nautilus goes into another buffered mult, where it is duplicated again. One copy goes directly into the ES9, another into the Qu Bit Databender, which is running in micromode and plays the buffer in reverse. The Data Bender signal goes into another Intellijel Quad VCA.

To fade in the signal in the later part of the song, I used the Mutabele Instruments Stages in step mode. The volume of the Quad VCA is turned all the way down in the first part of the song. In the second part, Stages gets a trigger from Oxi One, which triggers the next step and turns up the volume of the Quad VCA. This is how the signal from the Data Bender fades in.

Two more steps from Stages get a random trigger from Oxi One to turn the pitch of the Data Bender up and down an octave. This creates this tape style pitch effect. From the Quad VCA the signal goes into the ES9.

A second Rings is also sequenced by Oxi One. This time in stochastic mode, whose note density increases over various patterns in the course of the song. This Rings goes into a second dual dagger where highs and lows are filtered and where there is a slight resonance on the hi cut. The Hi Cut is modulated by a Flame XPANMIX. The crossfader of the XPANMIX gets two modulation signals. A fast and a slow sine curve. The fade between the two modulation signals was recorded in the XPANMIX by hand. The audio signal goes into an Intellijel Quad VCA, where the volume is slightly modulated. From there it goes back into a buffered mult where the signal is multiplied. One copy goes into the ES9 and another into the Strymon Magneto. The Magneto gets a random trigger from the Oxi One, which triggers the reverse button. The Magneto goes into the ES9.

The bass is played by the TipTop Audio Buchla 256t, which is filtered by an MI Blades and sequenced by a simple pattern from the Oxi One.

I played the main melody once through the Strymon Magneto in shift mode and recorded it with the Instruo Arbhar. This runs filtered by a third Dual Dagger through an MI Clouds, which receives pitch information from an MI Marbles. Together this creates a high texture, which fades in through Stages later on.

In post I mixed with Fabfilters ProQ3, C2 and Saturn 2. Also with Waves CLA76. Everything ran through Aberrant DSP Sketch Cassette II again.

I think that should cover the core of the patch Feel free to ask further questions, I'll try to answer them.

Feedback of any kind is welcome!

I hope you like it!
