Paris, in 1761, at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Just appointed police commissioner at Châtelet, Nicolas Le Floch, a young Breton with an attractive physique, is responsible for investigating the death of Viscount Lionel de Ruissec.

The family of the deceased is hindering the smooth running of the investigation by refusing to allow an autopsy to be performed on the body. Examining the corpse, Le Floch discovers that the young man was killed by the forced ingestion of molten lead and notes that his clothes are soaked. An atrocious and unusual death which leaves the commissioner perplexed. For the family, things are clear: it is a suicide. Shortly after, Ruissec's mother was also murdered...
