At first glance, Nier Automata Ver. 1.1a seems like a basic retelling of Yoko Taro's 2017 masterpiece video game. It is not. This anime is full of secrets and tries to do the impossible, adapting a work built on years of lore and obscure extra content. For fans of the original game, it collects a best of compilation of what makes Nier Automata great. For newcomers, it's a high quality gateway to one of the strangest, most beautiful video game universes ever.
