Why did the Aburi Accord Failed to Restore Peace? Was the Agreement Faulty? This is how the Last attempt to Stop the Nigerian Civil War Failed. In order to reach an agreement on what is now known as the Aburi Accord, delegates and representatives from the Eastern Region and the Federal Government of Nigeria convened on Aburi, in Ghana, on January 4 and 5, 1967. The Eastern region delegation were led by LieutenantColonel Emeka Ojukwu while the Federal Military Government delegation were led by Col. Yakubu Jack Gowon. The gathering in Aburi was to be the final opportunity to avert civil war or any other conflict. Unfortunately, this was allowed to slip through.
So, why did the Aburi Accord failed to bring the peace that was intended all along?
In this video, we will go back in time and examine the accord, as well as the intrigues that would subsequently result in the brutal civil war of between 1967 and 1970.
