**UPDATE** try warming up the color part of the plug a little bit with a hair dryer to soften the outer cover.

This is how i take apart an N64 controller plug. This is useful for switching cords but keeping the same color cord plug or to make it a lot easier to do a custom paint job on the cord plug.
