Nitro bid ointment application educational video for nursing students and nurses. This video demonstrates how to correctly administer nitroglycerin (Nitrobid) ointment by measuring out the ordered amount of inches onto the application papers.

What is Nitropaste ointment? It is most commonly used to prevent chest pain (angina) in patients with coronary artery disease. It works by dilating the coronary arteries on the heart, which allows more blood to flow to the heart muscle..hence preventing ischemia.

This medication is absorbed through the skin and enters the blood stream. Therefore, it is very important you always wear gloves when removing or applying nitroglycerin ointment.

Side effect include: headache, facial flushing, dizzy, lightheaded.

Before administering Nitrobid ointment you will need to: gather supplies (gloves, application papers, tape, plastic lining or tegaderm, medication, pen), perform hand hygiene, perform the patient's 5 rights, and assess the patient's vital signs (make sure the patient isn't hypotensive) etc.

Before applying a new application of nitro ointment, you must first remove the old application paper (use gloves for this) and wipe off any excessive amount of nitro left behind.

Then select a new site (always rotate sites) and make sure the site is free from hair and is completely intact. Sites that can be used include upper arms, legs, chest, or upper back. Then date, time, and initial the new application paper before applying the ointment to the paper. You will do this on the PRINTED side. WHY? Because you will be applying the ointment on the side of the application paper that is NOT printed. This is because when nitroglycerin comes into contact with the print on the printed side it will cause the print to leak into the ointment.

Then don gloves and measure the prescribed amount of inches on the application paper. You will do this on the opposite site of where you date and timed it (the side WITHOUT the print). The application paper is thin, therefore, you will be able to see the measuring scale on this side of the paper.

Then place the new application paper onto the new site (remember printed side up), and lightly spread the ointment onto the skin (don't massage it or rub it in). Then secure the application paper on the skin with tape and a plastic type dressing. Remove gloves, perform hand hygiene, and document.
