What is nonalcoholic fatty liver disease? Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a condition where excess fat builds up in the liver of people who drink little to no alcohol. Now, you might be thinking, "Fat in the liver? fat is supposed to be under the skin or around our organs, and you'd be right, to an extent. A healthy liver should contain little to no fat. But in NAFLD, fat starts to accumulate in liver cells, and this can lead to a host of problems. There are multiple stages to NAFLD. On one end, we have simple fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis. On the other end of the spectrum, we have nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, or NASH. This is a more serious form of NAFLD where the fat buildup is accompanied by inflammation and liver cell damage.
