North and South Kinsman Mountain via Basin Cascade Trail – Kinsman Ridge Trail – Appalachian Trail NH

After attempting parts of this in February with ice and snow, I returned to hike up and over the ridge, from Franconia Notch to Kinsman Notch. I stayed at the super nice Notch Hostel before and after this two day hike. I knew I would not be able to complete this in one day and decided to stay at the Eliza Brook Shelter about half way between the two notches. This hike was much more difficult than I anticipated, with the descent down the South side of South Kinsman being extremely steep! I was expecting the difficulty on the North leading up to North Kinsman, but not the difficulty on the way back down. I managed to evade thunderstorms and was somewhat lucky with weather, squeaking out a few good views. Temperatures were in the 90s and wicked humid. I opted not to continue over Moosilauke on day 3 because of heavy rain and storms. The biting flies were a bit extreme at elevation.
