This color Northwest Orient Airlines film encourages travelers to visit the Philippines and opens with an aerial view of Corregidor Island at the entrance to Manilla Bay and how life on the island has returned to normal after having been a battleground in World War II. The 1950s film shows fisherman heading out for the day’s catch while families live in their straw huts. On Luzon, residents carve elaborate likenesses for the tourist trade (mark 01:00) while others perform a native bamboo dance (mark 01:30) or gather coconuts to be used for soap, oil, or food. Getting to the islands is easy, the view is reminded at mark 03:00, thanks to modern airlines. Several scenes of Filipinos at work in fields or plantations follow as the narrator explains working and living in the Philippines, and at mark 07:50 we learn how lumber is a major export of the island. We also see the Philippines at play, enjoying horse racing (mark 08:55), as well as a parade by the military (mark 09:30) — a military full of courage and honor. There is also a glimpse of a baseball game (mark 10:05) — a sport introduced to the Philippines during WWII. And how does a traveler reach “this interesting land”? Via Northwest Orient Airlines (mark 10:47), as we watch a stewardess collect passengers’ jackets while tourists sit and relax. The picture also pauses starting at mark 12:45 and we see frames of bombed out buildings in “Old Manilla” that were destroyed during WWII — monuments “to the tragedy of war” — before returning to the “stately buildings” of a renewed city.
