Novella was initially written for Eminence Brass Quartet to display the lyrical qualities of the ensemble through use of simplistic writing, whilst providing a reflective piece for the audience to enjoy.

Composer Ben Hollings decided to arrange Novella into a duet for Cornet and Euphonium after considering that the lyrical writing would transfer into a duet setting effectively. The piece tells the tale of a short musical story where interweaving musical lines are showcased in the solo parts and are set against a simple, yet effective, brass band accompaniment.
