NPK fertilisers are specifically made formulations of different salts containing the elements nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Phosphorous rocks are insoluble in water, so need to be treated with acids to make ammonium phosphate salts which are soluble in water. The mined phosphate rich rocks are reacted with nitric acid to make phosphoric acid. The mined phosphate rich rocks are reacted with nitric acid to make calcium nitrate. Single superphosphate is a mixture of calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate. Phosphoric acid is reacted with ammonia to make ammonium phosphate. Mined phosphate rock is reacted with phosphoric acid to make triple superphosphate. Potassium rich rocks mined from the ground and are soluble in water.
