Patrick Bartley

"Oleo" by Sonny Rollins, performed by Patrick Bartley and William Schwartzman. Captured in a rehearsal studio in Tokyo, Japan in November 2022.

There's so much to say about this cut from the session. So much, that I felt it was necessary to just show some snippets of the fun we were having while doing this. There's nothing like a little rhythm changes to open things wide open to limitless possibilities.

**ALSO, bit of a disclaimer and apology this was the last song of the session, one take, 10 minutes til we had to get kicked out. This rehearsal studio likes to flash a light telling you it's time to wrapup, but the light was so bright and strong that it ended up flashing into the camera, and we had to just keep going no matter what. Just a warning and apology for that in case it bothers anyone watching.

While I think I may not be old enough, or have reached a point of experience in my own life and career yet to say I'm in a position to truly "pass the torch" yet, I still want to take this time to introduce you to a promising young pianist that astonished me when I first met him his name is William Schwartzman (@williamschwartzman), who just recently turned 18. Back in October, Will told me he would be in Tokyo visiting with his family, so I immediately took the opportunity to bring him to a studio to jam and make some YouTube videos. What happened, to me, was the beginning of what I know is the blossoming genius of this young pianist. In today's seemingly endless sea of technically gifted carbon copies, or the reluctance to be anything but "correct", Will stands out as someone who will have one of the next truly original voices in the future of jazz. When I met him at the Vail Jazz workshop, I knew it right away. Will SINGS on the piano with an eager fervor to take on the world with this artistry. It's extremely inspiring.

I'd like to also mention that each song we recorded for this channel was done in one take, because that's all we had time for. This was truly an immensely honest exploration of music in its purest sense, and I hope you can enjoy that transparency with every flub and mistake we left in to keep it as raw as possible. There's not enough of that on YouTube anymore.

Thank you so much for watching, and stay tuned for more from Will!
