The olympics were first held at this site in 776BC, and were held every 4 years after into the Roman period, with Emperor Nero competing in 67AD!

The site itself was likely first occupied by the Mycenaeans about 3500 years ago, and became the principle site of worship to the king of the gods, Zeus.

In the temple of Zeus on this site was one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world, a 12m high statue of Zeus, constructed of Ivory and Gold.

Olympia can be visited from Athens, or the surrounding towns of Kalamata, Nafplio or Patras. Ancient Corinth, the Corinth Canal, Ancient Messini, Argos, Mycenae and Epidaurus can also be included in a tour, being enroute to the site.
