As you may have noticed, many new laptops do not come with an internal CD or DVD player. So an external CD/DVD player is needed.

Chromebooks do not play audio CDs natively, so those audio CD need to have their music converted to mp3 files in order to be played within a Chromebook.
DVD movies need to be converted to avi files.
There are Chrome apps that play many file types. One good example is the app called VLC.

UPDATE 662017

You can still watch movies saved as AVI or even movie files, but the VLC app just dropped the watching a DVD movie function. So... No, they do NOT work with DVD movies any more. At some point, VLC removed this functionality. Your best bet is to rip the DVDs into some other file format. SO disappointing. I honestly believe that VLC was pressured to dropped.
