Acute Coronary Syndrome is when blood supplied to the heart muscle is suddenly blocked. Chest pain caused by acute coronary syndromes can come on suddenly, like with a heart attack. Other times, the pain can be unpredictable or get worse even with rest. The goal is to reperfuse myocardial tissue that is being damaged by a blockage. Reperfusion may involve the use of coronary angiography with balloon angioplasty and stenting otherwise known as PCI.
