Chapter 14 Lecture Video Part 1
Section 14.1 Conjugation: Learn the requirements for conjugation (adjacent p orbitals). Describe electron delocalization in conjugated systems. Differentiate between a conjugated diene and an isolated diene.
Section 14.2 Allylic Carbocations: Descibe the allylic carbocation. Represent delocalization with resonance structures and resonance hybrid structures. Estimate the stability of allylic carbocations compared to primary, secondary, and tertiary carbocations.
Section 14.3 Examples of Resonance: Draw resonance structures for the four different types of systems.
Section 14.4 Resonance Hybrids: Determine which resonance structure contributes more to the hybrid structure based on the three rules given in this section.
Section 14.5 Hybridization and Geometry: Explain the hybridization of adjacent atoms with lone pair electrons that are in resonance with an adjacent double bond.
Section 14.6 Conjugated Dienes: Identify and draw the scis and strans conformations of dienes.
Section 14.7 Interesting Dienes: Recognize isoprene and be able to identify terpenes like lycopene.
Section 14.8 Bond Lengths of Buta1,3diene: Explain why the C2C3 sigma bond in butadiene than the CC sigma bond in ethane.
These are the lectures that I use in my Organic Chemistry II course. The textbook I use is Smith, Janice "Organic Chemistry", McGraw Hill, 6th Ed., 2020, ISBN13: 9781260119107. Some images used in this video come from that textbook.
