On the first day of Kolkata to Keonjhar bike ride to Odisha we, Sudurer Piyasi, decided to pay a visit to few less known tourist attractions of West Bengal, viz Hatibari Forest and Jhilli Pakhiralay. Our friend Sukanta joined us from Kharagpur and we headed towards Baharagoda (in Jharkhand, near West Bengal, Orissa and Jharkhand border), which is around 70 km from kharagpur. From here, the road to the right turns towards Ghatshila in Jharkhand. We took the road to the left towards left and just after crossing Subarnarekha river bridge comes a crossing named Kumardihi from where we again take left to catch Haribari road that will take us to West Bengal Forest Development Corporation's bungalow inside Hatibari Forest beside the river Subarnarekha. It a beautiful and serene place amidst the forest. A private accommodation is also available nearby named "Hatibari Friends Retreat". From here we travelled another 10 km forest road to visit Jhilli Pakhiralay, which is more like a park surrounded by a large water body and developed under Jhilli Irrigation Project. Flocks of migratory birds arrive here every winter. However, the place will be beautiful even in other seasons of the year. Private accommodation is also available here and entry ticket to the park is @ Rs 20/ per person. From Jhilli we went back to the National Highway, i.e. Bombay Road and through the silky roads of Odisha through the hills and forests crossing Bangriposi, Bisoi, Joshipur finally reached Keonjhar at aroung 4:15 pm. In Keonjhar we checked in to our trusted hotel Sainath Guest House near Keonjhar court place. The next day will explore Keonjhar extensively. Some useful contact numbers are given bellow.
