Lets demonstrate Oropharyngeal Airways
Placement of an oropharyngeal airway is the foundation of basic emergency airway management. The oropharyngeal airway is used when a patient is unable to protect his or her airway (e.g., because of coma, lack of gag reflex, inability to cough)
The oropharyngeal airway also can be used with patients with oral endotracheal tubes to serve as a bite block or patent pathway for suctioning remove airway secretions.
Insert an oropharyngeal airway only in unconscious (unresponsive) patients with no cough or gag reflex.
As it will stimulate patient to vomit so To avoid aspiration, remove of foreign material before inserting the oropharyngeal airway.
Select the appropriatesize oropharyngeal airway by measuring from the patient's earlobe or angle of the jaw to the corner of the mouth
An oropharyngeal airway that is too small may push the tongue into the oropharynx and cause an obstruction; an oropharyngeal airway that is too large may obstruct the trachea.
Technique to insert
Use a tongue depressor and displace the tongue forward.
Insert the oropharyngeal airway with the tip down, following the curvature of the base of the tongue into the oropharynx
or
Alternatively, insert the oropharyngeal airway into the mouth upside down with the tip pointing toward the roof of the mouth; then, as the tip of the oropharyngeal airway reaches the posterior wall of the pharynx, rotate the oropharyngeal airway 180 degrees1 while advancing it into the proper position.
Ensure that the flange of the oropharyngeal airway is stable and positioned securely on the patient's lips.
