Ortona is a lovely coastal town in the Chieti Province of Abruzzo, Italy, dominated by its huge, impressive 15th century Castello Aragonese. Ortona has some lovely beaches; access down to Abruzzo's Via Verde cycle path; its cathedral of St Thomas has the remains of St Thomas the Apostle in a beautiful gold urn displayed in its crypt; its commerical port dates back to the 4th century BC and there are plenty of bars and restaurants too.

Ortona was the scene of numerous fierce battles between the Germans and Allied armies especially between 21 and 28 December 1943 during the "Battle of Ortona" which led Churchill to define Ortona as the " Stalingrad of Italy". There is a war museum dedicated to the Battle of Ortona here and just outside of Ortona is the Moro River Canadian War Cemetry.

Ortona è una graziosa cittadina costiera nella provincia di Chieti in Abruzzo, Italia, dominata dal suo enorme e imponente Castello Aragonese del XV secolo. Ortona ha delle spiagge incantevoli; accesso alla pista ciclabile Via Verde d'Abruzzo; la sua cattedrale di San Tommaso conserva le spoglie di San Tommaso apostolo in una bellissima urna d'oro esposta nella sua cripta'; il suo porto commerciale risale al IV secolo aC e non mancano i bar e i ristoranti.

Ortona è tristemente nota anche per i numerosi e cruenti scontri tra tedeschi ed eserciti alleati soprattutto tra il 21 ed il 28 dicembre 1943 durante la "Battaglia di Ortona" che portò Churchill a definire Ortona la "Stalingrado d'Italia". C'è un museo della guerra dedicato alla battaglia di Ortona qui e appena fuori Ortona c'è il cimitero di guerra canadese del fiume Moro.
