“Nussio was born in 1902 in Grosseto, Italy. He was the chief conductor of The Orchestra della Svizzera italiana in Lugano. During his life, he composed a great number of pieces for orchestra, strings and winds. The Variations over an Arietta by Pergolesi is one of his best works, it is a very famous and important piece for bassoon. This piece was composed in 1953 for bassoon and string orchestra, it included ten different variations. Some variations are very emotional and peaceful in slow tempo, however the rest of variations are very powerful or lightly in the fast tempo, they can show off the player’s musical skills. Especially for the last variation, it was composed in treble clef for bassoon, the whole variation is in the high range of bassoon. It is a challenge for bassoon players.” (Lan YingChieh)
