Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a serious neurologic condition that can result from various infections, including pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS), and can cause sudden onset of psychiatric symptoms, movement disorders, seizures, and coma. Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils.

PANDAS is short for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. A child may be diagnosed with PANDAS when: Obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD), tic disorder, or both suddenly appear following a streptococcal (strep) infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever.
