Have you ever wandered around the cobbled streets of Marvão? This is a mustvisit location if you are exploring the Alentejo region in Portugal. Also considered one of the 1000 places you must visit before you die, by the New York Times

We decided to show you a different way to reach the castle, instead of driving. We hiked from the small village of Portagem, up the Sapoio mountain, until we reached the castle of Marvão. This is part of the PR1 MRV Marvão walking route that follows the ancient, medieval cobbled roadways

Perched on a quartzite crag, part of the São Mamede Natural Park/Mountain Range, Marvão just gives you a breathtaking view over all the surrounding lands. As José Saramago, nobel prizewinning author, once said, "from Marvão, one can see the entire land..." On a sunny lateAutumn day with clear skies, one can see as far as the snowcovered peaks of the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain range in Continental Portugal

Keep in mind the streets inside the castle are quite narrow, it is easier to park your car outside of the walls if you are driving there. It is free to explore the village inside the walls but there is a 1.50 euros fee to enter the castle (highest point) ℹ
